The Wolf

The astronaut was the first one. The wolf is the big one.

The hard part isn’t twisting a thousand cubes, it’s deciding what each sticker should be. A Rubik’s cube has six colors, and if you just pick the closest one for every square, the wolf comes out flat, like a cartoon. I wanted it to have depth, so Dad and I spent a few hours on the computer trying mixes until the fur looked like fur. We ended up with five colors. Green never looked right on a wolf.

Then Dad bought the cubes and pressed print, and the rest was me: one cube at a time, matching the plan, sliding them into the frame, row by row, for weeks.

It’s the first permanent piece of art at my school. It’s going to be there longer than I am.
